Education
The Problem
Access To Education Is One Of The Basic Needs For Everyone To Thrive In Society. According To UNESCO, 3.5 Million Cameroonians Are Illiterate.
Illiteracy is much more pronounced in rural areas, where thousands of children are under-schooled or not in education at all. The difference in the illiteracy rate between rural and urban areas speaks for itself: 44% of the population in rural areas is illiterate compared to 12% in urban areas.
Under-schooling in rural areas is often the result of a social and cultural construct (people consider, for example, that fieldwork is a priority or that only young boys must be educated), but also of the lack of resources allocated to education: lack of infrastructure, lack of teachers, lack of school supplies. The consequences for illiterate or under-schooled people are rather disastrous:
- Lower-level employment, leading to a precarious financial position;
- A higher rate of unemployment.
- Lower self-esteem;
- Higher health risks due to being more prone to misuse medicines.
Our Solution
Along with access to clean water and basic healthcare, education is another one of our foundation's top priorities. Our desire is to allow young people to study in adequate settings, with the right resources for their success.
To achieve this, we implement various actions to encourage families to send their children to school and to motivate students to succeed in their studies, including, but not limited to:
- The award of grants for the most deserving students;
- A scholarship award to top students who can’t afford to continue their higher education.
We also work with the local schools to assist with the provision of teaching materials along with renovation work of the school facilities.
